Sustainable energy systems in Ukraine
Despite the current situation in Ukraine, the country has started to plan its reconstruction. A key part of this is to build modern, sustainable, carbon-dioxide neutral energy systems, which requires an increase in the capability to design, build and manage such systems. IVL is contributing to the project by providing coordination and expertise.
The aim of the project is to boost knowledge and proficiency in the Ukrainian energy sector, ahead of the reconstruction of infrastructure. To achieve this, a close collaboration will be established between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, the Institute of Renewable Energy at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IVE), and the Department of Renewable Energy Sources at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI).
Together, new knowledge and expertise will be developed by way of a virtual laboratory, the creation of teaching materials, the introduction of specialized software, and educational seminars. Lastly, a joint application to Horizon Europe will be submitted, with the aim of increasing Ukrainian researchers’ ability to obtain funding.
IVL provides coordination of the project and expertise in education, energy systems and modelling. IVL has considerable experience of building proficiency in the energy sector, and of conducting research on energy systems – in the case of Eastern Europe, in Moldavia and Romania.
