Övervakning av Level II-ytor med digitala flygbilder. Slutrapport

The objective of this project was to develop and demonstrate methods for monitoring of the status of the crown layer in Level II observation plots using scanned near-infrared colour photographs. Methods for derivation of crown maps with delineation of each tree, spectral analysis and classification of defoliation as well as percentage of naked branches were demonstrated. The methods constitute a basis for repeated monitoring of changes in the crown status regarding crown size, spectral characteristics (i.e. discoloration), defoliation, percentage of naked branches etc. For long-term monitoring digital camera systems are recommended, as opposed to scanning of diapositives. With optimised work routines the procedure will require approximately three days per plot. Thus, monitoring of a selected sub-sample of the Swedish Level II plots seems economically feasible
