Evaluation of the European assessment method Level(s) for buildings

There are several objectives with the Level(s) system where our concern is that the market will perceive the system as a tool for comparison, and methodology that makes it possible to assess whether the buildings meet a given absolute limit value or not in a procurement, or in a law such as the coming national mandatory climate declaration for all new buildings. However, the system is not developed for such benchmarking. Another obvious problem is that the system is so flexible in it set up so that what is to be included in the analysis is entirely controlled by the users, regardless of what the calculation result is to be used for, which makes all comparability between different calculations based on Levels) in principle impossible. Our proposal and conclusions are therefore that the system should be further developed so that it handles benchmarking in the future. Such development will be required to get LCA useful in the market and with the law applications we now see coming. Another shortcoming of Level(s) system in its current form, is that there is no support for how the LCA calculation should be done digitally from information already present in the construction process. Such digitization development is required if it is not to be a cost-driven analysis and to achieve a calculation result of sufficient quality.
