DEEPNOC – A study in practical control strategies for minimal nitrous oxide emissions

The DEEPNOC project aims to compile and analyze practical strategies for mitigating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This knowledge formation initiative focuses on bridging the gap between academic research and real-world applications, providing utilities with the insights needed to manage N2O emissions effectively.

The DEEPNOC project, led by IVL in collaboration with several Swedish water utilities, focuses on addressing the challenge of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). N2O is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential approximately 300 times greater than carbon dioxide over a century. Rather than directly reducing emissions, this project aims to bridge the gap between theoretical models and practical challenges by compiling and synthesizing knowledge from both Swedish and international sources. The objective is to comprehensively understand the current strategies and practices for N2O control in WWTPs.

The project is organized into four key work packages: conducting an extensive literature review, facilitating international knowledge exchange, synthesizing the gathered insights, and disseminating the findings. These efforts will contribute to developing a knowledge base that WWTP operators can use to understand and implement effective N2O management strategies. The findings will be shared through reports, webinars, and presentations at national and international conferences, thereby supporting broader efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
